He was born as his parents (his father was the well-known Yiddish author Mendel Mann) fled from Poland into Russia just ahead of the Nazis as World War II was starting. Their amazing journey took the family to a Russian gulag, then to Berlin with the Russian army, from there to a castle in southern Germany under the protection of the American army, and finally, to Palestine.
