He was educated in the local school system, and graduated with the Triad High School Class of 1963. He later enlisted in the United States Army, and served until 1993 as an infantryman non-commissioned officer. Following his military career, he returned to college and became an information systems and technology teacher at private schools in Utah. He is a metastatic melanoma cancer survivor, cancer-free since 2005. He is a member of the American Legion, the Disabled American Veterans, and the Veterans of Foreign Wars. Divorced, he is the father of four sons and four daughters, and grandfather to eleven grandsons and three granddaughters.
