There are 42 species of pythons in the family Pythonidae; the ball python is just one of 10 species in the genus Python, which is a sub-grouping within this family of reptiles. Pythons are a constrictor, which means they wrap their bodies around prey and squeeze until they suffocate. Ball pythons are one of the smallest of all pythons, and only grow to about 3 to 5 feet long.

They earned their name because they tend to curl up into a ball if they feel threatened, and they love to hide in dark places.
