It is unfortunate that in the estimation of all too many followers of World War One aviation, the greatness of an aerial combat Ace is directly proportional to the number of victories with which the flyer is credited. Many Aces passed up larger scores because initially they preferred to help novice pilots get accustomed to warfare aloft and later directed their attention to the welfare and safety of the pilots who served under their command.
