Lady Caroline Sutton accepted an offer from Lord Francis Fernleigh during a ball one evening. This was to be the last time she saw him for some years. Her father had refused her hand and thereafter, circumstance kept them separated.
Now, through the tragic death of his elder brother, Francis has become his father's heir, a position he never coveted.
