The legal liabilities that probation/parole officers may be exposed to are examined. Eleven chapters make up this monograph: an overview of state and federal legal liabilities; civil liability under state law -- state tort cases; civil liability under federal law -- section 1983 cases; legal representation, attorneys' fees, and indemnification; presentence/preparole investigations and reports; liability of parole board member for release or nonrelease; conditions, modifications, and changes in status; supervision; revocation; liabilities of supervisors; and questions, specific concerns, and general advice. A description of the court system and basic legal concepts and a glossary of legal terms are included as appendixes.
