The Islamic Republic of Iran is one of the largest countries in the Middle East. Known as Persia to the world until 1935, Iran (the official name between 1935 and 1979, and the name by which the country is now called) is actually the 18th largest country in the world. Iraq is located to the west and the northern boundaries are shared with Turkey, Armenia, and Azerbaijan. The western boundaries are shared with Turkmenistan, Afghanistan, and Pakistan. The Caspian Sea is to the north and the Persian Gulf and Gulf of Oman are situated to the south.
