1928. Other volumes in this set include ISBN number(s): 0766162540. Volume 1 of 2. These volumes represent the biographical account of Jacob H. Schiff, the American banker and philanthropist. Written by a very close acquaintance of Schiff, this account of his life is as close to an autobiography as can be without his writing it himself. Schiff was a partner in Kuhn, Loeb and Company, later becoming the head of the firm. He was known for his role with E.H. Harriman against J.P. Morgan and Company and J.J. Hill in the struggle for control of the Northern Pacific Railroad, which later led to the stock market panic of May 9, 1901. His philanthropies included establishing a Semitic Museum at Harvard University, a chair for the study of German culture at Cornell, as well as various hospitals and schools of higher education.
