After having served throughout WWII as a medic, Jeremy McDavid returns to his home in Coon Hill community in northwest Florida, not only war weary, but loaded with added grief for having failed to save the life of his best friend. He is greeted by his aging grandfather, anxious to pass on to his grandson their family's hidden history, a history which his grandfather insists must be revealed to the other family members only after his own death. Learning about his family history influences the way Jeremy faces his future in the postwar world.
