His first novel, \u003ci\u003eGo Tell It on the Mountain, \u003c\/i\u003e appeared in 1953 to excellent reviews, and his essay collections \u003ci\u003eNotes of a Native Son \u003c\/i\u003eand \u003ci\u003eThe Fire Next Time \u003c\/i\u003ewere bestsellers that made him an influential figure in the growing civil rights movement. Baldwin spent much of his life in France, where he moved to escape the racism and homophobia of the United States.
