by Jorgen Pascal Francisco Hartogs (Author)

This book looks at several archeological structures found in Cork harbour but focussing on the Martello Towers. It also explores why these towers were built and why they were built in Cork. It will also aim to provide a historic background as to why these towers were built and why the design of the Martello towers differs from those built elsewhere. It will also provide an insight into the defenses of Cork harbour and the need for Martello Towers in 19th Century Cork harbour. Though it will provide a historical background its main purpose is an archeological study of these Martello Towers but it also is a good story. A story well worth reading for anyone interested in history, folklore or archeology or indeed in all 3 disciplines. I've done my best to make it interesting, and succeeded in my opinion, and to focus not just on the facts but also on the story behind the towers. I have enjoyed researching and writing this ebook and I'm sure you will enjoy reading it. If you interested in finding out more about the Martello Towers you will find a very extensive bibliography at the end and a reference list. You are also free to email me at: jhartogs@me.com with your questions.

Author Biography

I would like to introduce myself. My name is Jørgen Hartogs and I live, work and study in County Limerick, Ireland. I have previously lived in Dublin, Belfast, Cork, Carrigaline and other places in Ireland. Having lived in Belfast, Dublin and Cork I now live in county Limerick in a typical, rural town. I'm working as a tour guide in German, English, Dutch and Flemish daily, and I studied Local History and Regional Studies at UCC and Cultural Anthropology at Colaiste Stiofan Naofa. I have over 10 years experience as a tour guide in Ireland, Northern Ireland, Wales and Scotland. I have experience giving city tours in Limerick, Cork, Belfast, Galway and Dublin as well as walking/hiking tours and bus tours all around the aforementioned countries. The last 3, 4 years I have worked for several tour companies on a free-lance basis providing tours all around Ireland, Northern Ireland, Wales and Scotland and done several day tours for day tour companies. I have a diploma in Local History and Regional Studies from UCC and have written several books on the folklore, history and archaeology of south Co. Cork, where I used to live before I moved to Ballingarry, Co. Limerick. I have fluent, native level, German, Dutch and Flemish as well as English at native level with an accent that has been described as half Kerry, half Welsh. On a personal level I have a huge interest in GAA, especially football, history, folklore, archaeology and Irish dance and music. I have a lot of friends in the music and dancing scene and know most places in Ireland and Scotland like my backyard.
