Antimicrobial resistance (AMR) occurs when microbes develop mechanisms to defend themselves from the impact of antimicrobials. Infections occurring due to resistant microbes are not easy to treat as they require high doses of antimicrobial drugs or other alternative medicines which are more toxic. The microbes resistant to various antimicrobials are referred to as multidrug resistant (MDR). Every class of microbes may evolve resistance, which may develop naturally through genetic mutation or through acquisition of resistance from one to another. Antimicrobial resistance is majorly caused by the excessive use of antimicrobials, which supports the mutations and results in making the antimicrobials ineffective. The control of antimicrobial resistance requires intelligent combination of approaches for various complimentary therapies. These combination therapies should extend beyond biologically active molecules for controlled delivery of strategies.
