Oxidative stress refers to an imbalance between antioxidants and free radicals in the body. Free radicals are oxygen-containing molecules with an unbalanced number of electrons. The body creates free radicals during regular metabolic processes. Oxidative stress happens naturally and contributes in the aging process. It can occur due to a variety of reasons including air pollutants, consumption of alcohol, radiation, cold, drugs, toxins, and trauma.
