Non-small cell lung cancer (NSCLC) refers to a type of disease in which malignant cells develop in lung tissues. The symptoms of NSCLC are shortness of breath and a persistent cough. NSCLC is primarily divided into three types, including adenocarcinoma, squamous cell carcinoma and large cell carcinoma. Smoking is the leading risk factor of NSCLC. Other risk factors include exposure to radiation, family history and exposure to second hand smoke. Chest X-ray, thoracentesis, CT scan, physical exam and health history, sputum cytology and laboratory tests are used to diagnose NSCLC.
