In the 1960s the citizens of Nottingham saw the greatest change in the city in the 20th century. In the previous decade, the city planners envisaged a dual carriageway which would encircle the center of Nottingham and they began by building a new highway from Castle Boulevard to Friar Lane. Many slum properties were demolished in the area around Walnut Tree Lane near the castle, but a number of historic buildings were also swept away in the construction of the new road--notably Collin's Almshouses and St. Nicholas' Rectory. The construction of the Broad Marsh Shopping Centre, complementing the Victoria Centre, was equally contentious. Douglas Whitworth is Nottingham's leading historian and has written a number of books on the city, including Nottingham: Life in the Post-War Years, A Century of Nottingham, and Nottinghamshire Memories. He lives in Carlton, a suburb of Nottingham.
