He submitted plays for several years to the Foundation of the Dramatists Guild's Young Playwrights Festival before they did a staged reading of his one-act, \u003ci\u003eSerendipity and Serenity\u003c\/i\u003e in 1987, followed by a full production of his next play, \u003ci\u003eWomen and Wallace\u003c\/i\u003e (1988). In 1991, he teamed up with Ethan Hawke to create New York City's innovative Malaparte Theater Company.
