Author Biography

Professor G. K. Gupta retired after a thirty-five year distinguished career in computer science education, research and academic management. He is currently Adjunct Professor of Computer Science at Monash University, Clayton. Professor Gupta was born and raised in India and completed undergraduate studies at the University of Roorkee (now IIT, Roorkee). He did Masters in computer science at the University of Waterloo in Canada and then migrated to Australia in 1972 and joined the Department of Computer Science at Monash University. While working full-time, he completed PhD at Monash University. In 1986, Professor Gupta moved to James Cook University as Foundation Professor and Head to establish a new department of computer science. He moved to Bond University as Dean of the School of Information Technology in 1998. He returned to Monash in October 2002 as Deputy Dean and then Acting Dean before returning to the position of Professor of Computer Science. Professor Gupta was seconded by the Australian Government to the Asian Institute of Technology in Bangkok for two years 1979-81 to help set up a new department there. He has also spent one year at University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign, one year at Bell Laboratories in New Jersey, eight months at International University in Germany and two three-month visits to VIT University in Vellore, India. Professor Gupta is the author of a book "Introduction to Data Mining with Case Studies" published in 2006 and "Database Management Systems" published in 2011. He is a Fellow of the Association of Computing Machinery (ACM), a Fellow of the Australian Computer Society (ACS) and a Senior Member of the IEEE. He was awarded the inaugural Distinguished Service Award by Computer Science Research and Education (CORE) society in 2004.
