Sherrod's Legacy is based on the life of Sherrod Mayes, the Tennessee pioneer. A young man's casual attempt to examine the character of his beloved grandfather became a life-long process of discovery. The desire for more information about a lost hero revealed generations of elders who preceded him. The lives of Sherrod Mayes and his descendants shed new light on a once faded view of the American experience. As the quest continued for final pieces of the historic puzzle, the search turned inward. The seasoning affects of time, experience and self-reflection eventually inspired a heightened appreciation for memories of this lifetime. Author Biography
Ron Mayes is a career educator with many years of experience as a public school teacher, principal, and superintendent. He earned a doctorate in Educational Leadership from Indiana University, and has invested much of his life in the interest of enlightening the minds of young students. Dr. Mayes is also a son and a grandson; a father and a grandfather; a brother and a husband. His quest for a deeper understanding of the source of his grandfather's rich character, led to discoveries beyond his imagination. The witness of his mother's long battle with Alzheimer's disease, and the discovery of his similar destiny, directed the search inward. The author's life experiences took on a whole new meaning as he took a long and deep look at the events that shaped him. What began as a leisurely quest to honor his grandfather, became a life-long mission, and finally a race against time. As the project came to an end, he sought to document how he had come to better appreciate his own life-shaping experiences, in hopes that others would do the same.
