In 1968 he became the first Japanese writer to receive the Nobel Prize for Literature. One of Japan's most distinguished novelists, he published his first stories while he was still in high school, graduating from Tokyo Imperial University in 1924. His short story \"The Izu Dancer,\" first published in 1925, appeared in \u003ci\u003eThe Atlantic Monthly\u003c\/i\u003e in 1955. Kawabata authored numerous novels, including \u003ci\u003eSnow Country\u003c\/i\u003e (1956), which cemented his reputation as one of the preeminent voices of his time, as well as \u003ci\u003eThousand Cranes\u003c\/i\u003e (1959), \u003ci\u003eThe Sound of the Mountain\u003c\/i\u003e (1970), \u003ci\u003eThe Master of Go\u003c\/i\u003e (1972), and \u003ci\u003eBeauty and Sadness\u003c\/i\u003e (1975).
