Robert Louis Stevenson, born in 1850, traveled extensively during his short life (died 1894), which enlarged his imagination to the life of pirates, sea adventures, and stories particularly popular with young adult readers. He took seriously the task of writing, failing to achieve success with his early ventures, but attaining a kind of immortality with Treasure Island, Kidnapped, the Jekyll and Hyde story and others.
