When David sins, Benaiah realizes that his king has become his idol. In the aftermath of David's crash, Benaiah struggles with trust. Is his own wife, Sarah, safe? Will he be eliminated as well? Could his support of David bring consequences for him and his family.
Despite a united Israel, Benaiah's hope for peace evaporates. Conflict with the surrounding nations, within the kingdom, and with the LORD Himself present the biggest challenges he's faced so far. Benaiah longs for peace and wonders if it will ever come to Israel.
People still long for peace, irrespective of its varied definitions. Seemingly, everyone wants peace within, peace in their family, peace in their nation, and that ever-elusive world peace. What is the source of this universally-sought-after freedom from war, hostilities, dissension, commotion, disturbance, enmity, and strife? King David himself wrote, "Pray for the peace of Jerusalem." (Psalm 122:6) Does this apply today? To us? Is Benaiah's desire for security, harmony, calm, quiet, and reconciliation yet to be fulfilled?
