F nelon, claimed in brotherhood by Christians of every denomination, was born in Perigord, on the 6th of August, 1651. To the world he is F nelon; he was Fran ois de Salignac de la Mothe F nelon to the France of his own time. He wrote many works, of which this is one, and they have been collected into twenty volumes. The translation here given was anonymous, and was first published in the year 1713.
