The work is a genealogy into the philosophical and literary origins through analysis of the text of the notebooks, which begins as a narrative in ancient texts but falls into madness with its speculations on the possibility that the horrors in the fiction of H.P. Lovecraft, horrors which the notebooks' author makes claims to suggest are in fact real. The Things we hear are the sounds of the dead dreaming of Cthulhu, or the gibbering mouths of Shub-Niggurath.
