The Townsend brothers were among the earliest settlers in Wisconsin, arriving in the state in the lead mining region in 1827. Both Absalom and E. C. Townsend settled in Shullsburg, Wisconsin where they became among the wealthiest landowners in the area and were both also elected to the Wisconsin Legislature in its early years.
