Journey into Discomfort is a reflection on my backpacking journal from 1980. I am a 26-year-old lesbian-in-the-making whose life explodes, and I set off searching for an emotional Exlax to rid myself of my internal discomfort. Because my life has been a trail of "Oh, I shouldn't have done that." decisions, I chose to backpack through Asia. My internal discomfort can now be mirrored and amplified externally. One-eyed, one-armed machete-carrying innkeepers, train derailments, and floating bodies will light my path, and there will be a thousand ways to die at the hands of tour guides. But there will be great beauty as well.
