WRITINGS REGARDING INTERACTION WITH FIRST PEOPLES AND FRIENDS GARNERED MOSTLY FROM QUAKER SOURCES AND OBSERVATIONS

"My soul desires feelingly to all the tribulated ones everywhere, of whatsoever name, nation, or colour they may be. If we humbly seek to stand and to be faithful to manifested duty; love will surely harmonize the true disciples together and nothing will be found to hurt or destroy in all God's holy mountain" Joshua Evans, (Recorded Quaker Minister) 1798

Joshua Evans (1731-1798) was a father, farmer, bricklayer from Haddonfield Friends Meeting. He practiced the natural healing arts often learned from original peoples on the land. He was a recorded minister who in an ecumenical spirit became a travelling evangelist to every Quaker Meeting in North America (except for three remote meetings in Appalachia).

He was passionate for the abolition of slavery and for the justice towards tribal First Peoples. He held strong views on stewardship. His faith and practice was based on Quaker testimonies of equality, simplicity, peacemaking and reconciliation.

Joshua Evans serves as a good example in the keeping of Quaker journals: the foundation of this publication. In his journal he wrote "My soul desires feelingly to all tribulated ones everywhere of whatever name, nation or color they may be. If we humbly seek to stand... and be faithful to manifested duty, Love will surely harmonize the true disciples together and nothing will be found to hurt or destroy in all God's holy mountain.
