Educated at Berkhamsted School and Balliol College, Oxford, he started his career as a sub-editor of \u003ci\u003eThe Times of London. \u003c\/i\u003eHe began to attract notice as a novelist with his fourth book, \u003ci\u003eOrient Express, \u003c\/i\u003ein 1932. In 1935, he trekked across northern Liberia, his first experience in Africa, recounted in \u003ci\u003eA Journey Without Maps \u003c\/i\u003e(1936).
